Thankful in Venice

Italian vacay

My niece Eleanor spent her semester abroad from Tulane in Venice, Italy last fall. So we (I) decided to spend Thanksgiving with her. And her family decided to, as well.

We started out in Treviso. Early morning walk happening here.

We squeezed in a trip to Aosolo before heading to meet family in Venice. Josh has always wanted to visit because his Mom loved this town.

ven aosolo buildings

An Italian poet dubbed Asolo the “city of a hundred horizons” and its setting among foothills and mountains certainly gives that impression. We loved the vista and the view of the Alps.

We hiked a stunning leafy path up to Mt Ricco.

Mt. Ricco rests the remains of the fortress and pieces of defensive wall that once protected the town. Mose holds down the fort.

We headed into Venice as the moon came up via water taxi through the Grand Canal.

We rented a lovely house through the company Views on Venice to share with the Houston Mayers on a canal near Campo San Barnaba. Great view from our terrace.

ven neighborhood veiw

Venice was very cold. But quiet compared to other times of year. Mose man represents.

We ate at a neighborhood place recommended by my friend whose husband is from Venice. Called Mascaron. My fav the cucchieti plate. Seafood heaven!! Also, loved Olivanera!!

We took a tour of the Jewish quarter called the Il Ghetto. This seems to have been the first ever Jewish ghetto and the word may have originated from the Italian gietto meaning “foundry.”

We viewed Doge’s Palace.

It is filled with reliefs, 12th century gilded mosaics cover most of the interior ceilings, vaults and cupolas.

On the floor there are more mosaics as well as geometric marble patterns. Above the altar sits Pala d’Oro, a golden panel studded with gems.
